This pudding was born in Bakewell in Derbyshire, the biggest town in the Peak District National Park’s mellow stone buildings. The pudding, according to popular belief, was found by chance. Around 1860, an accident occurred at The White Horse, a small inn. When a strawberry tart recipe was misinterpreted and the resulting ‘tart’ was topped with almond custard. A Bakewell pudding is made out of a jam-filled pastry shell and a filling made with egg and powdered almonds. Since then, this Bakewell pudding has become a neighbourhood favourite. Mrs Wilson, a local housewife, was so taken with the dessert that she acquired the recipe and turned it into a company. Seeing a lot of promise in an unintentional discovery. With the secret recipe she had purchased, she began selling the puddings from her house.
