Devon’s Hidden Coastal Gems

Devon is a charming county with much to offer, so we thought we’d compile a list of it’s beautiful areas that not everyone knows about…

Barricane Beach

Everyone knows Devon for its bustling towns and famous beaches such as Woolacombe beach or Staunton beach, but not everyone has heard of or visited a beach so close yet so tucked away and isolated, named Barricane Beach. Known for its beautiful sunsets and hidden cove between the rocks that if you are looking to get away from the noise of everyday life, this beach is the perfect getaway for you. They even have a beach café serving Sri-Lankan delicacies nearby.

The Lonely Island of Lundy

Isle of Lundy, North Devon

This gorgeous island lies between England and America and is waiting for you to come and explore it. If a getaway from the hustle and bustle with no one to disturb you is what you are looking for this summer, then a trip to the Isle of Lundy is essential.

We cannot blame you for wanting to escape the overcrowded beaches and you do not even have to travel extremely far for your own slice of paradise. We should note that there is no Wi-Fi or reception on the island, adding to the privacy you experience

London Bridge

No not that one! This one is even more beautiful in our opinion as it has been created naturally into an incredible arch by the cliffs of Devon in Torquay. If you want to come and experience this natural beauty for yourself then there are two ways to do it. Either you take the more relaxed route of a Cliff walk that takes around an hour or so, passing by so much greenery and coastline, with hundreds of opportunities of the perfect new Instagram pic! If you are more daring and consider yourself an advanced swimmer then you can swim all the way up to it and under too! There are many opportunities for those who like cliff jumping too (Although we advise those that do want to try it to be extremely careful)!

Heddon’s Mouth

If you’re looking for somewhere lowkey to spend the day a trip to Heddon’s Mouth would be perfect as only the locals know about this beauty! Though it’s not the most accessible route to get there, there are various routes on the National Trust page to guide you there, no matter your walking ability! The walks take about an hour or so however we know you won’t regret it! Why not spend the day relaxing on its small beach until the sunset comes around, just take a look at it above, its truly something spectacular!

The Hindu Caves

This last one is a real treat of a hidden gem as we can guarantee that half of the locals are unbeknownst to its location or history of the caves! Hidden in plain sight across a busy main road lies the largely forgotten caves nicknamed ‘Hindu Caves’. They are given this name as the author Charles Kingsley as while he lived in Torquay during the 1850s he loved exploring his hometown coast and described them as “A labyrinth of double and triple caves like a Hindu temple” in his book ‘The Water Babies’. Those that are brave enough can swim up to it when the tide is high enough, otherwise, it calls for a bit of a climb around to reach the inside of the cove.
