The first literary reference to Robin Hood came from a passing reference in Piers Plowman, written sometime around 1376 – 1379. Piers Plowman or Visio Willelmi de Petro Ploughman is a Middle English allegorical narrative poem by William Langland.

This was one of Robin hood’s earliest mentions, where Piers Plowman mentions that he is “familiar with rhymes of Robyn Hood”.

After the first mention of Robin hood, more came about as he was involved, even briefly. These are found in the tales of Robin Hood and the Monk (c.1450); The Lyttle Geste of Robyn Hode (written down c.1492-1510, but probably composed c.1400); and the C17th Percy Folio, which contains three C15th stories: Robin Hood his Death, Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne and Robin Hood and the Curtal Friar.

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire is an 1883 novel by the American illustrator and writer Howard Pyle, was the first Robin Hood book.

Robin Hood is now a legend read by all. Everyone knows the story of Robin Hood. This book is a children’s book as the legend is typically read from a young age. Robin Hood uses his archery skills and his wits to steal the money back from the king and his cronies, and return it to the poor. As the king and his cronies were only able to gain significant amounts of wealth by plundering the people they ruled and stealing the productive outputs of private individuals. Accompanying Robin are his faithful followers The Merry Men. They include Little John, the Millers son, Will Scarlet, Friar Tuck and Alan a Dale. If the king was to catch Robin, his punishment could result in being hung.

Robin Hood stole from the rich to give to the poor as his way of standing up for the common man in the face of tyranny.

There are claims that Robin Hood was a real man! Unfortunately, though these do not present Robin in the best light. In fact, they say that Robin Hood was real and did steal! however, what he stole went into his own pocket rather than the pockets of the poor.
