To mark World Suicide Prevention Day which happens every 10th of September, Mental Health Charity Norfolk and Waveney Mind partnered up with the Zoological Society of East Anglia (ZSEA) to encourage people to get outside and enjoy nature.

The Day brings together organisations and communities from all around the world to raise awareness about how communities can work together to make the world a place where fewer people commit suicide. The two organisations have joined forces to celebrate World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th and to encourage more people to connect with nature, recognising the positive influence that such a relationship can have on one’s mental health.

These ringtailed lemurs caused much hilarity as they scampered about, cuddled up to each other and sunbathed at Africa Alive on Sept. 3. Africa Alive is a wildlife park, which is home to a wide variety of animals from across Africa.

Claudia Roberts, Chief Executive Officer at the Zoological Society of East Anglia, said: “Connecting communities with nature to enhance wellbeing is one of our charity’s key commitments. Banham Zoo and Africa Alive also provide a unique opportunity for our communities to connect with each other in a relaxed environment, with plenty of green spaces to enjoy some mindfulness walks together

To encourage as many people as possible to spend quality time with their friends and family on September 10th, we are pleased to be able to offer a special £5.00 entry charge at both zoos. Participating in one of our “Walk and Talk” events will provide you with the opportunity to meet new people, regardless of whether you attend alone or as part of a group.

Non-profit organisation ZSEA is dedicated to improving wellness and eliminating poor mental health, but we also want to eliminate the stigma associated with seeking help. A representative from Norfolk and Waveney Mind will be on hand on the day, and they will be glad to give the appropriate assistance and resources”.

“The research is clear that access to nature is vital for our mental health, as many individuals discovered during the recent lockdowns,” said Sonja Chilvers, Director of Operations for Norfolk and Waveney Mind. This World Suicide Prevention Day, both ZSEA and Norfolk and Waveney Mind are dedicated to promoting awareness and eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health, and they are happy to be working together to achieve these goals.

As the biggest mental health charity in Norfolk and Waveney, they strive to educate the local community about suicide prevention, dispel some of the prevalent myths surrounding suicide, and urge people to take action and check in on their friends, family members, and colleagues.
