In the globe, there is just one location where you may have the unique opportunity to interact with hundreds of nesting mute swans on a plot of land that is over 25 acres in size. One of the most memorable things to do in Dorset is visiting the Swannery.
In the late 1040s, Benedictine monks founded a monastery in Abbotsbury and created the Swannery. During the Dorset banquets, the monks tamed the swans so they might be used for food. The monastery of St. Peter was destroyed in 1539, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The remains of St. Nicolas’ Church may still be seen surrounding the town. Following the purchase of the Swannery by the Ilchester Estates, the Swannery has been in the hands of the Ilchester Estates.
