It was built in 1870 and was threatened with destruction in 1991 when British Rail decommissioned the facility. A group of committed volunteers rescued it and turned it into a one-of-a-kind railway museum and events facility.
It features a rotating exhibition of steam and diesel locomotives and other rolling equipment, an operating signal box, the Roundhouse Halt platform, and the Springwell Branch running line, in addition to the turntable and shear legs (lifting gear).
