More than 40 galleries house the museum, which offers works of fine art, costumes, jewellery, social history, archeology, and ethnography.
Pre-Raphaelite paintings are one of the most famous exhibits in the gallery, and it has one of the largest public Pre-Raphaelite collections in the world. At the gallery’s opening, many works were accumulated. When the city’s collections were in need of boosts, local industrialists and politicians stepped up.
There are also artifacts from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, as well as culture and history from Europe and the rest of the world.
