It is a continuation of the Mendip Hills, made of Carboniferous Limestone. The tiny islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm are two further continuations. Large amounts of fossils were put down in the marine layers around 320–350 million years ago on the cliffs on the northern and southern flanks of Brean Down.
