Step back in time and discover the history of Chawton House and the Knight family. Described as the ‘Great House’ by Jane Austen, Chawton House was inherited by her brother Edward and was regularly visited by the novelist, who lived in the bailiff’s cottage in the village with her mother and sister. Visitors can see the Knight family dining table, at which Jane dined with her family, Edward Austen’s suit, travel journal and portrait, and a miniature portrait of Jane Austen’s beloved niece, Fanny Knight.  

Discover the changing displays of works, from Chawton House’s collection of early women’s writing, the rolling programme of exhibitions, and see portraits of women writers throughout the House. Visitors can also explore the Gardens and Parkland, including the terraces built by Montagu Knight in the early 1900s and the Walled Garden built by Edward Austen, now featuring the Elizabeth Blackwell Herb Garden.  

Enjoy a light lunch and a slice of cake in the Old Kitchen Tearoom or a delicious takeaway treat from the Tea Shed. Visit the Shop and browse the selection of gifts related to the House and its collections, including a large variety of books.  

Events run throughout the year including talks, workshops, tours, and dining experiences.
