Coldharbour Mill is one of the oldest woollen mills in the UK having been in continuous production since 1797 and is recognised by Historic England as “probably one of the best-preserved textile mill complexes in the country”. Largely untouched since the industrial revolution, the rich heritage lives on as it continues to use the traditional looms and machinery to produce high-quality knitting yarn and fabrics using methods handed down through generations. It is a working wool museum where visitors are not just able to relive the sights and sounds of the industrial revolution, but also see Coldharbour Mill is one of the UK’s oldest woollen mills, having been in continuous operation since 1797 and being named “possibly one of the best-preserved textile mill complexes in the country” by Historic England.
The rich legacy lives on as it continues to employ ancient looms and technology to manufacture high-quality knitting yarn and textiles using processes passed down through generations, mostly unchanged since the industrial revolution. It’s a functioning wool museum where visitors can watch craftsmen creating traditional fabrics, exquisite knitting yarn, and hand-woven carpets, as well as recreate the sights and sounds of the industrial revolution.
The mill was initially a grist mill, which is still standing on the site, but it was converted to a woollen mill in response to the abundant resources – including sheep and water – the site offered. From the towering chimney that overlooks the town of Uffculme to the distinctive scent of wool and oil, a visit to Coldharbour Mill is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go back in time and experience the sights and sensations of a historic factory. Many of the exhibits are interactive, and the factory floor has remained virtually unaltered since Victorian times, with line shafting transporting electricity throughout the facility. The narrative is told through guided tours and skilled artisans, and the café is located on the leat edge, where fish and kingfishers now rule the river. The factory shop sells a variety of Mill-made items. Trials and dressing up for kids are also offered. For frequent visitors, they provide a membership programme with extra perks.
