The Arkwright Society, an educational organisation dedicated to the recovery of industrial historic buildings and the preservation of the valuable built and natural landscape in and around Cromford, owns and manages it.
Sir Richard Arkwright proceeded to build the mills, warehouses, and workshops that today make up the Cromford Mills complex until approximately 1790. Taken together, it paints a fascinating image of an early textile manufacturing complex.
However, about 1840, Cromford Mill’s textile output was severely limited due to water supply issues, and the buildings were repurposed. A brewery, laundries, and cheese storage were among the facilities.
