Inscription on the World Heritage List carries with it duties outlined in the World Heritage Convention, to which the United Kingdom is a signatory. The Derwent Valley Mills Site and its surrounding landscape must be “preserved, conserved, displayed, and transferred to future generations,” according to these guidelines. To meet its obligations under the Convention, HM Government mandates that all World Heritage Sites on its territory have management plans in place. The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Partnership has been charged with developing the DVMWHS Management Plan and overseeing its implementation by the government.
