Doddington’s mellow brick façade with its walled gardens was originally erected for Thomas Tailor, the registrar to the Bishop of Lincoln. Although, in 1749, the Hall was obtained by John Delaval of Seaton Delaval in Northumberland, who carried out significant inside re-decoration, embracing the bright and elegant Georgian style that is still visible today. For many, the Doddington Gardens are equally as impressive as the Hall itself. Mellow walls create the framework for the traditional East Front and West Gardens, remaining true to the original Elizabethan arrangement. Beyond the West, the wonderfully maintained Wild Gardens begin. The gardens at Doddington have been repaired, cared for, nourished, and expanded to their greatest potential through centuries, most recently by Antony and Victoria Jarvis and Claire and James Birch.
