Durham Museum is situated in the English city of Durham. The museum, which opened in 1976, is housed in the decommissioned church of St Mary-le-Bow, which is located close to Durham Cathedral and Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The museum depicts Durham’s history from mediaeval times to the current day. It is filled with a wide range of items, models, photographs, and audio-visual resources. These exhibits, along with the accompanying literature, provide visitors with a glimpse of life, work, and leisure in this old walled city.
A garden on one side of the museum is available to visitors whenever the weather permits. Fenwick Lawson, a well-known local sculptor, has two magnificent pieces in the garden. The Durham Museum also has a small store and a centre for creating brass rubbings.
