When the Elsecar Heritage Railway was established in 1850 to transport iron and coal from Elsecar to Mexborough, it was part of the South Yorkshire coal industry. When Cortonwood Colliery closed in 1964, the engines performed their final runs.
Elsecar Heritage Railway was founded in 2006 to revitalise the route. The track was originally laid from Elsecar to Hemingfield, but a 2014 lottery funding began the process of re-laying it to Cortonwood. It, like most other Heritage Railways, it is ran and maintained entirely by volunteers, and it allows you to relive the golden age of steam. It’s also a great chance for the younger generation to come up close to a genuine engine for the first time.
Come in and enjoy a genuine Yorkshire welcome at The Elsecar Station. Meet the crew, view the trains, and tour the station and history of Elsecar Heritage Railway on Sunday afternoons for their frequent passenger train trips.
