It takes five miles to go between the little village of Embsay and the quiet touristic destination of Bolton Abbey on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, which runs through the scenic Yorkshire Dales between the two towns. From the industrial workhorses for mines, collieries, ports, and manufacturing yards to the more elegant locomotives that graced the mainline, the appearance and sound of enormous majestic steam engines was a sight and a sound that was unforgettable. The rural request-stop Holywell Halt is indeed a wonderful place for a picnic, and their friendly, historically costumed personnel will ensure that you have lasting memories of a memorable day out in the countryside. During your trip, you will be taken through the breathtaking Yorkshire Dales scenery. An enjoyable one and a half mile walk off Bolton Abbey station will take you to the ruins of the 12th-century priory. A picnic just on the banks of the River Wharfe or even in the shadows of Strid Wood, where Cavendish Pavillion provides refreshments, is only a short walk away from the Cavendish Pavilion.
