Located in a late Victorian courthouse on Deansgate, next door to Spinningfields, Hawsmoor’s aim is to serve the best steaks in Manchester. The interior is true to the building and features lots of reclaimed materials from the era, including parquet flooring from a (different) courthouse, panelling from Birmingham’s Sandwell College and (well-cleaned) glazed bricks from a public lavatory in Liverpool.
Before trying to open the UK’s best steak restaurant, Hawksmoor has travelled the world in search of the perfect steak, from Kobe in Japan to Argentina’s Pampas by way of Italy, Australia, and Texas. The verdict? The best steaks come from carefully reared cattle right here in Britain.
When Hawksmoor first opened over a decade ago on a scruffy East London street, we embarked on a journey back in time. Hunting out long-lost Punches, Juleps, Swizzles, and Sours, exploring the weird and wonderful worlds of Anti-Fogmatics (to be drunk ‘immediately on awakening, or at farthest, on getting out of bed’) and Bridging Drinks (an Edwardian invention to pass the awkward hours between lunch and dinner).
