In 2017, the doors of this brand-new, highly interactive museum were officially unveiled. This book provides an account of the Wesleys and eighteenth-century Methodism, with an emphasis on their historical significance as well as their relevance in modern times. Many of the hands-on displays are intended to be fun for both adults and children, in addition to being accessible to adults. The Museum is housed in the twelve upper rooms of the 1748 building, which was originally constructed in the 18th century and has been restored. Visitors will get the opportunity to see John Wesley’s study and bedroom, as well as the main living space of the preachers, where youngsters will have the opportunity to dress up in period costumes. There are displays in the museum that cover a wide range of themes, including eighteenth-century Bristol, the slave trade, the role of lay preachers, medical self-help, eighteenth-century education, and the growth of Methodism throughout Britain and America. Important historical artefacts are also on exhibit in each chamber, which adds to the atmosphere. In his works, John Wesley emphasised issues of social justice and other challenges, which are still important in today’s society. Some of the museum’s rooms are devoted to these and other related themes; others are not. Consider making a mental point to be challenged in addition to being entertained and enlightened.
John Wesley’s Chapel & The New Room Museum
The New Room in Bristol is the oldest Methodist Chapel in the world (originally built in 1739 and extended in 1748) and the cradle of the early Methodist movement. It was built and used by John and Charles Wesley and the early Methodists as a meeting and preaching place and the centre for helping and educating the needy members of the community. The chapel itself is on the ground floor (where there is also a shop) and is accessible from either the Broadmead or Horsefair courtyards. Upstairs, there is an admission charge Arts Council accredited museum which tells the story of John and Charles Wesley and their life and work in Bristol.
