At the 15-inch narrow gauge Kirklees Light Railway, ride in stunning hand-painted carriages behind one of Yorkshire’s Great Little Steam Trains.
The ride takes guests three and a half miles into the foothills of the South Pennines from Clayton West to Shelley, passing through the beautiful landscape, the old Blacker Wood, deep cuts, and the Shelley Woodhouse Tunnel, Britain’s longest 15-inch tunnel. While taking through the scenery, keep an eye out for Emley Moor Mast and as many farm animals as you can in the nearby fields!
Six beautiful steam locomotives and two diesel locomotives are presently available to transport you on your journey – which ones will you encounter during your visit?
The one-way travel takes around 25 minutes, while the return trip takes about 65 minutes. If you’re not in a rush, our basic Day Rover tickets provide unrestricted travel on the day of your visit. At both ends of the railway, there are spacious picnic spaces and outdoor adventure playgrounds. While the railway is operational, the Buffer Stop Cafe at Clayton West Station sells hot and cold meals, while the Shelley Station Tea Room serves snacks and drinks.
It’s more than simply a train trip with a well-stocked gift store, a miniature railway around the duck pond, and Afternoon Tea & Steam Experiences available to reserve.
