New Theatre Oxford, located in the heart of the historic city centre, is home to some of the biggest names in entertainment. From West End musicals to world-class music, top comedians to the greatest in dance, and much more, the New Theatre Oxford stage has something for everyone.
For approximately 185 years, there has been a theatre on George Street. The first theatre opened in 1836, followed by a second in 1886. The Dorrill family took over the venue in 1908, and the third Theatre, the ‘New Theatre,’ opened in 1934. The rebuilding of the theatre as we know it today was overseen by Stanley Dorrill. He commissioned a new structure from Sunderland’s well-known theatre architects, William and T.R. Milburn. T.P Bennett and Sons, who also designed the Saville Theatre in London, collaborated with the Milburns on the sumptuous art-deco interior.
