Seaton Delaval Hall is a magnificent mansion located on its own grounds with beautiful gardens and a wonderful collection; nevertheless, it is much more. It’s a marker indicating the long history of a family that bought land here in the late 11th century.
The house stands on the site of a Norman village, with the old Norman chapel still in use. Built for Admiral George Delaval between 1719 and 1730, it is not only the finest mansion in the northeast of England but also one of the best works of Sir John Vanbrugh, one of the masters of English Baroque architecture.
The estate has been the setting for drama, intrigue, and romance for over 900 years, while the surrounding environment has fueled the industrial revolution. The home has been through horrible fires, military occupation, and the threat of destruction. It now serves as a fantastic gathering place for the arts, heritage, and community.
