This hidden gem, located on the fringes of Newbury’s northernmost suburb on the borders of tranquil surroundings, is frequently referred to as “Shaw House.” In the Second Battle of Newbury, it is well-known for its position as the headquarters for King Charles I. However, recent research has revealed that the King never visited his house, despite the fact that it was in the midst of a major war at that time period. Other royals have paid trips, the most prominent of whom was Elizabeth I, who was the most notable of them. The house was bought in the 1720s by the flamboyant James Brydges, the 1st Duke of Chandos, who was known for his extravagant lifestyle. However, even though it was not their principal residence, the Duke family appears to have spent some time in the region, and the second Duke even acquired a bride at an auction in Newbury, which is where the storey ends. It is also open to the public during school vacations and weekends between February and September each year. Shaw House is a Grade I listed multi-purpose event venue that may be used for a variety of events.
