Shepherd Wheel Workshop, located in the scenic Porter Brook valley, was one of several tiny water-powered grinding mills that dotted Sheffield’s waterways, and it is the earliest intact example of the industry, with evidence going back to the 1500s. Skilled grinders created precise, sharp cutting edges in this dark, damp workplace. Grinding halted in the 1930s, and the Wheel’s vital function in Sheffield’s cutlery industry came to an end. See the restored functioning waterwheel and equipment in operation, as well as cutlery grinding tools and hear stories about the grinders who worked here throughout the years at this Grade II listed structure and Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Shepherd Wheel Workshop
Shepherd Wheel is a functioning example of Sheffield’s knife-grinding business that is one of a kind.
