A refuge dedicated to historic, poetic, and mythical beauty. Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson fell in love with Sissinghurst Castle and established a world-famous garden there. Harold’s architectural design of the garden rooms, as well as Vita’s colourful, profuse planting throughout the gardens, reflect the romance and intimacy of her poetry and writings. From its traumatic past as a prison in the 1700s to its function as a headquarters for the women’s land army, Sissinghurst Castle Garden has witnessed a range of historical occurrences. It was also a family home to a number of intriguing people who either lived there or came to visit on a regular basis.
