The South Devon Railway is a branch line of the former Great Western Railway.
Glistening old GWR steam engines pull trains full of interested passengers of all ages between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. The path follows the river Dart for nearly the whole journey, passing through a wildlife-rich area rarely seen from the road.
Buckfastleigh has a riverfront promenade and picnic area, gardens, an interesting museum, a workshop with ancient steam and diesel engines, a well-stocked shop, and refreshment facilities. Tickets for Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies can be purchased together. You’ll drive via peaceful Staverton and historic Totnes. Rebuilt utilising structures and antiquities from around the west country, it is definitely worth a visit. While you’re there, check out the award-winning Totnes Rare Breeds Farm just adjacent to the station. Multiple-person tickets are available. Both the town and mainline station are walkable.
