Artefacts, pictures, maps, sketches, and papers documenting the history and customs of the North Tyne Valley and Redesdale are housed in this modest Museum and Heritage Centre, which now includes a new Carriages Tea Room. Border Counties Railway, Border Reivers, WP Collier Photographer, mining, farming, including the Stannersburn Smithy, heritage, and oral history are among the exhibits. A computerised collection of historic pictures, as well as a database of local family names, are available to the public at the Heritage Centre. From putting on a Reiver’s helmet to playing the Sammy the Salmon videogame, there is enough for children to do. Each year, the Centre hosts a number of events, including unique historical and art exhibitions, a vintage and classic cars weekend in April, and poetry and music readings and performances.
