Gloucester’s Museum covers the narrative of the city’s beginnings as a Roman colony and its subsequent growth during the Dark Ages and Medieval periods. Richard Wilson, Thomas Gainsborough, John Atkinson Grimshaw, and Thomas Dibdin are among the artists whose works may be seen in this lovely Victorian edifice.
The world-famous Birdlip Mirror, magnificent Roman tombstones, and the Gloucester Tables Set, the world’s oldest complete backgammon set, are all part of the Archaeology collection.
Keep an eye out for these and other exhibits and activities at the museum, which changes on a regular basis…
The museum also has displays and exhibits on the bottom floor that promise a much more participatory experience. A Roman kitchen playhouse and a mediaeval street are among the museum’s highlights, as is a section of the ancient Roman wall.
Visit their charming café, which serves a variety of teas, coffees, cakes, crisps, and biscuits, as well as a fun gift store with historical and local items. The award-winning Tourist Information Centre of Gloucester is housed on the ground level of their lovely building!
