The museum, which is housed in a microgranite quarry, makes the most of its location in the Northern Lake District. It is close to many of the well-known and well-documented geological excursion sites. The quarry itself is a RIGS site with interesting features such as contacts between the “Skiddaw Slate” and the granite intrusion. With the help and cooperation of the Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society and a number of individuals, the museum now has a new mining section. The Mining Room houses artefacts, plans, and photographs from many local mines that exploited copper, iron, lead, zinc, tungsten, graphite, barites, and fluorite in this area. There is a section on lighting, drilling, and explosives, as well as a representative display of local minerals.
