Few people realise that beneath the surface of the North Aquatic, and especially close off Whitby, there is such a diverse array of sea life. Huge shoals of herring move to the inshore seas off the Yorkshire coast every year in late summer and fall to spawn. Cetaceans, sharks, birds, and seals all come to feast on the herring.
Skipper Bryan Clarkson is a whiz at locating whales off the coast of Whitby, and he’s quickly earning the moniker “The Whale Whisperer.”
Whale watching cruises have seen porpoises, white-beaked and bottle-nosed dolphins, Minke, humpback, sei, and fin whales, as well as thousands of seals, in recent years.
You don’t have to cross the world to see this incredible sight; you can do it all from Whitby, Yorkshire’s top resort.
Of course, we observe various animals such as sunfish, jellyfish, and sharks, as well as a variety of seabirds such as Gannets, Guillemots, Razorbills, Puffins, Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Herring Gulls, Cormorants, Skuas, and Terns, to mention few. Many migrating birds, including shearwaters, raptors, various types of geese, ducks, wading birds, and a variety of tiny birds, arrive in late fall.
