White Scar Cave is located on the lower western slopes of Ingleborough, along the B6255 Ingleton to Hawes road.
In 1923, Cambridge undergraduate Christopher Long found the cave when he entered the first tunnel through a fissure in the rock. To light the route, he placed candles on the brim of his hat. A waterfall was one of the first things he noticed. When it’s at maximum flow, almost 55 tonnes of water pour over it every minute. The cave, which is the longest display cave in the UK, originally opened to the public in 1925.
Carbon dioxide-rich water dissolved limestone deposits, resulting in the cave’s formation. It presently has strange and beautiful stalagmites and stalactites formations. In the 200,000-year-old Battlefield Cavern, there are literally hundreds of stalactites. It is one of the biggest caves in Britain, measuring more than 100 metres long and up to 30 metres high.
