Christmas Movies Filmed in England
England is the perfect picturesque spot during the winter season and has been proven by producers deciding to film Christmas movies in England during the winter months. Some of these Christmas movies you must’ve seen and if you haven’t we recommend you do go and watch them!
The Holiday
The Holiday is a classic Christmas movie that we all know and love! The film is a romantic comedy based on two ladies who live completely different lifestyles but are experiencing the same challenges in their relationships. They find each other on a house-swap website in order to temporarily get away from their emotional problems, and they wind up living each other’s lives for a few days… or so it seems. Each lady discovers something that they had previously been lacking from their lives. One house is based in California and the other is based in the UK countryside!
Iris’ home is a beautiful English cottage based in Shere in the district of Surrey -it is known to be the most photographed town within Surrey! The town was taken over with the local’s permission and covered in a coat of snow. The producers searched for the perfect cottage to film in, they did find one which was exactly what they were looking for but unfortunately, it was too isolated and over a 4.5-hour drive from where the film crew was staying. So they decided to build one instead!
Rosehill Cottage was inspired by a cottage named ‘Honeysuckle Cottage’ that is based in Holmbury. After 4 days Greenacre says that a cottage seemed to be formed and was beginning to look real! 4 weeks was spent sorting the landscape so it would look like a cottage that although had only been up for a week was actually 200 years old. The builders pulled it off and the cottage really did look like a beautiful 200-year-old cottage in the middle of the Cotswolds!
The interior is just as beautiful and was designed to be charming and homely. The colours are mismatched and there are random accessories dotted throughout the cottage this makes the home feel lived in and described to be ‘oh-so-charming’. The details within the interior are truly remarkable and all blend together so well. The cottage is designed to be warm, cosy and homely and of course typically British!
The scene where Amanda who is played by Cameron Diaz goes shopping is actually filmed in Godalming. The shop is sweet and quaint decorated with Christmas garlands. The shop they filmed in is actually a candle shop that they added props to make it appear as if it was an English village market. When Amanda goes on a date with Iris’ brother Graham they visit Cornwell manor.
Cornwell Manor was where they stopped for a quick spot of lunch and a wonderful walk as they ventured the grounds. This location is in Oxfordshire, although you cannot visit this manor you are able to actually hire it out for weddings, parties and exclusive events! With 8 bedrooms, a drawing-room, a dining room, a library, a kitchen and a wonderfully formal ballroom, it is a stunning home and huge. It was built in the 16th century and improved in 1939! Although the exterior of the date was filmed here the actual exterior where they stop for lunch is filmed in a completely different location within Beverly Hills!
Get Santa
Following the accident of Santa Claus’ sleigh, the police are on their search for Santa, a father and son band together to rescue Christmas after they find Santa Claus sleeping in their garage.
Steve Anderson is first filmed in Lambeth Prison courtyard, this is shot in Lancaster, Lancashire as he is on his way to being released. Steve calls his ex-wife to discuss him seeing his son Tom now he is released, this scene is shot down Silver Street in Leeds whilst he collects his old campervan out of storage. Tom lives at Park Lane, Rothwell in West Yorkshire. His letter to Santa flies out of his Chimney when we first see his home.
Steve then arrives at his house to pick Tom up for an adventure after visiting Santa in jail to find hir reindeer, Dasher. When they find Dasher the police catch them and a police chase begins! They wind through the roads of Leeds and speed through main roads to escape. Once they are lost they arrive where the sleigh had crashed and let Dasher where he leads them to the accident. This scene was filmed at a trackbed in Wortley.
They then head to Suffolk to find a way to rescue Christmas by saving Santa. They end up in West Yorkshire walking on foot with Dasher when the camper breaks down. They are seen by the public and everyone thinks Dasher is just part of a show until they see the police and have to start running.
Plenty of scenes are filmed across Yorkshire and Leeds within the movie. they are also filmed in Lapland and London. Yorkshire is very proud to have had such a huge film production take place in their beautiful county.
A Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol of 2019 is a British dark fantasy drama film inspired by the 1843 novel of A Christmas Carol of course by Charles Dickens…. It is the first instalment in the A Christmas Carol series. Caution: adult vocabulary is used throughout the play as well as horror aspects, allusions of child abuse, forced prostitution, and the depiction of a drowning child.
The school scenes for A Christmas Carol were filmed in Berkshire. The location was Stanor Park which you are able to actually visit yourself. You must book tickets for a tour and access to the gardens. This was Scrooge’s school in the film and was paid a visit when the Ghost of the past brought him back to his school days. Stonor Park has held the Stonor family for over 850 years so the house is filled with plenty of history which is interesting to explore.
A Christmas Carol was also filmed in Rainham Hall and Gardens, which was chosen for the location because of its adaptability and spectacular look. Because of its magnificent and imposing demeanour, the Hall is an excellent choice for Scrooge’s residence, but it is also a suitable size for a townhouse in London. Rainham is just on the border of London and Essex, some people say, Essex, others say Greater London.
This is Lord Leycester Hospital in Warwick, it was featured in the movie as Bob Cratchit’s house. Bob Cratchit was Scrooge’s clerk in the film and was underpaid and treated poorly. He has a large family so working in poor conditions is worth the money for him and his family to survive. The style of the house being half-timbered represents a good example of the medieval courtyard architecture within England at the time of the real Christmas Carol story.
The film crew travelled down to Burnley in Lancashire in order to shoot at the Queen Street Mill in Burnley. This location was used to shoot a welding scene in the film. The locals hadn’t even realised but were very impressed when they found out they had such a great cast of brilliant celebs had visited to shoot for a magnificent movie!
The Muppet Christmas Carol
The Muppet Christmas Carol was filmed in 1992. This adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic tale, which features the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, gives a fresh spin on that fateful Christmas Eve when Scrooge is haunted by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
The Muppets Christmas Carol was filmed in Shepperton Studios – this is located in Surrey and has a history dating all the way back to the 1930s. Although it was filmed in Surrey the studio still aimed for the scenes to represent London like the original Christmas carol. We had to feature this film as it was the first Muppet movie without the creator, Jim Henson, so was a very emotional and special movie for Brian Henson who was passed on his father’s role and definitely made him proud.
