Tales of Hunted Places in Buckinghamshire

For the lovers of all things scary and spooky, these creepy hotspots are the perfect hunted places for you to visit!

1. The death of a miller’s daughter

Bradwell Windmill is said to be hunted by a miller’s daughter from hundreds of years ago. The mill was erected in the early 1800s and one of its owners had a daughter who got caught in a tragic situation. She was very lucky as she had two potential suitors after her at the time. Unfortunately, jealousy got the better of the men which led to one of them being murdered. His body was apparently hung on the local gibbet for the young woman to see. Naturally, she was heartbroken – despite still having the other suitor – and so she sadly committed suicide at the windmill. Her father soon came to find her body leaving him devastated. It’s now said this young woman haunts the windmill to this day and you may even be able to hear her cries of pain. If you are looking to visit one of the most hunted places in the coutry, you definitely cannot miss this one!

2. The Hunted Pub

The Grade II listed Chequers Inn in Amersham has a rich history of hauntings. It was built in the 15th century as a coaching inn for people travelling from London to the West Country. It was used as a holding pen for ‘Lollards’, before they were forced to stand trial for the unspeakable crime of heresy. There have been reports of over nine ghosts over the years at the pub and previous landlords have even attempted exorcisms to rid the pub of its ghosts.

3. The soldiers trying to nurse their wounds

Chenies Manor is a 12th century Tudor manor in Buckinghamshire. It was known that King Henry VIII used to visit the home along with some of his wives and Elizabeth I also came to visit in the 16th and 17th centuries. The English Civil War killed hundreds of men in the area and now one of those soldiers is said to haunt the grounds. Visitors are often able to catch a glimpse of him nursing his wounds tragically. Supposedly a soldier can also be heard limping up and down the home’s staircase and some have even heard loud thuds and creepy laughter coming from the armoury room.

This is said to be one of the most hunted places around, and we totally get why!

4. The Black Monks of Missenden

If you decide to visit Missenden Abbey, you should definitely know that is said to be one of the most hunted places within the UK. It has a history that dates back over 800 years – so ghost hunters are usually very intrigued by it. It was founded in 1133 by a group of Augustinian Canons from Arrouaise in Northern France and it was particularly favoured by King Henry III who accepted the Abbot’s hospitality numerous times.

It soon fell through the hands of the royals until Queen Elizabeth I gave it to Robert, Earl of Leicester before it then went to an MP soon after. However, monks from the 13th century haunt the Abbey. Supposedly the Black Monks of Missenden were notorious in the area at the time as they did not stick very strictly to their own rules. A monk who was sinful now haunts the grounds as punishment for his acts. There are other ghosts however that haunted the building. A figure of a woman was seen wearing old-fashioned clothing drifting down the staircase once and then out through a door. The figure was seen again and she’s said to be wearing a black Victorian-style dress while carrying a vase of flowers.

5. The Haunting Grey Lady

The Kings Head is one of the town’s oldest pubs and it is said to be haunted by a grey lady – among a number of other ghosts. It is owned today by the National Trust but it dates back to around 1450 with some even saying it’s perhaps earlier. It is reported, a creepy grey lady, potentially a nun, is said to have been seen numerous times around the fireplace and a phantom 19th-century maid is also said to haunt the gatehouse staircase after she had fallen to her death. That’s not all though. Recently it has been said that the pub owners have seen a very tall figure who appears inside a locked cupboard wearing a black hat and black coat. And inside the Great Hall, the clocks and people’s watches also have a strange tendency to stop at the stroke of midnight. Strange.

Are you brave enough to visit any of these hunted places?
