27 May – NYMR History Talk at Pickering Station

9:45 am to 10:45 am. Suitable for Adults. 

Join them for an enlightening journey with Ron Pickering, a distinguished historian and NYMR expert. Ron will lead you through the captivating history of the line, spanning from its inception to the present day in 2024. Delve into the fascinating story of how Whitby’s necessity for connection to the rest of England spurred the creation of the railway, overcoming formidable challenges along the way. Discover how the perseverance of countless individuals transformed a dormant British Rail branch line into one of the most beloved heritage railways in the UK. The talk lasts approximately 1 hour, pre-booking is required.

27 May – Signal Box Demonstrations at Pickering Station

10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Suitable for Families. Drop-In Sessions.
Looking for some hands-on fun? Join NYMR at Pickering South Signal Box on Platform 2 at Pickering Station for exciting signal box demonstrations. Bring the kids along for a day of exploration and discovery! They’ll explore the role of the Signaller and how important they are in ensuring safety on the railway, you can even try your hand at being a Signaller in this signal box!

28 & 30 May – Step into the Past at Goathland Station: Victorian Railway Photobooth

10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Suitable for Families. Drop-In Sessions.
Head to their new Learning Coach at Goathland Station and step back in time with their Victorian Railway Photobooth! Dress up in period costumes, snap some timeless photos with their instant camera, and take home a special keepsake. A picture is worth a thousand words – what story will yours tell?

29 & 31 May – Nostalgic Fun at Pickering Station: Victorian Photobooth and Vintage Games

Make your way to the Platform 2 Classroom at Pickering Station and immerse yourself in the charm of yesteryear with their Victorian Railway Photobooth! 1 June – Short NYMR Railway Film Screening with Talk

2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Suitable for Adults and Children Aged 13+.  

Celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2023 was a wonderful moment for the NYMR but how did they get here? Filmed in the early days of the Preservation Society this short documentary explores how a disused line was given new life. They’ll be joined by one of the filmmakers and some key figures in the film to talk about what drove the movement forward and their experiences at the NYMR, pre-booking is required.
