Monday 5th August – Introduction to Ceramic Conservation
Are you an avid puzzler? Do you enjoy putting things together? Or are you really accident prone and need some tips on repairing that vase you dropped at your Nan’s? Then this is the workshop for you! First you’ll smash your very own pot, then you’ll repair it to its former glory, finding out about the techniques Conservators use to make those joins disappear. It might be magic (but it’s probably science).
Monday 12th August – Introduction to Metals Conservation
Why do some metals survive for hundreds of years? Why do they change colour? Did that object always look like that? These are all questions we’ll be answering and more in our introduction to metals workshop. You’ll be given a real archaeological metal small find from one of YA’s excavations, comparing it with its x-ray and having a go at conserving it to its original shape. If you like picking at things, you’ll love this!
Monday 19th August – Introduction to Wood Conservation
Why doesn’t it survive as well as other materials and why does it deteriorate so quickly when taken out of the ground? You’ll learn why it is so important to create an accurate record of a wooden object -because not everything can be kept! You will see how the wood species is identified and you will record a real archaeological wooden artefact from one of YA’s excavations, learning what this can tell us about ancient technology and what trees were being exploited before power tools and plywood!
