We’re delighted to announce a very special performance from The Wave Pictures next May, as they tour their new album “When The Purple Emperor Spreads His Wings” – released this month on Moshi Moshi.
The new album’s title means ‘Spring’ and has four sides – one for each season. December sees the release of the first season, Autumn. Winter will follow shortly on. The LP packs in more songs than any previous Wave Pictures release.
The record showcases The Wave Pictures’ hallmark special blend of pop, garage rock, and psychedelic sounds – always evoking a strong sense of time and place. The record was written by guitarist, songwriter and singer David Tattersall before and during lockdown, and the seasonal/annual track listing relates specifically to the year we lost from our lives due to Covid.
This is The Wave Pictures’ 19th studio album, and the first since 2018. Band members are David Tattersall, Franic Rozycki, and drummer Jonny “Huddersfield” Helm. They signed to indie London label Moshi Moshi in 2006. Collaborators include Billy Childish, Stanley Brinks. In 20154, the band paid homage to one of their heroes, Daniel Johnston with a cover of his album, Artistic Vice.
The Guardian has described their work as “charming, witty pop songs shot through with Jonathan Richman’s gawky glee and Suede’s doomed provincial romanticism… They owe a certain debt to The Smiths, and Tattersall has Morrissey’s knack of marrying the ridiculous and the sublime”.
